Terrorism is a plague that impacts countless people all around the world, but in spite of the fact that this is the case it’s fair to say that some countries suffer from more terrorism incidents than others. The Institute for Economics and Peace put out a report that revealed 6,701 deaths caused by terrorism incidents in 2022 alone.
This represents 9% decrease from 2019, and a significant 38% decrease from 2015 with all things having been considered and taken into account. What’s more, 42 countries reported deaths caused by terrorism in 2022, which happens to be the lowest number reported since 2007.
It can be pretty clear to see that terrorism is no longer on the rise, but with all of that having been said and now out of the way it is important to note that there are plenty of countries around the world that are still getting fairly severely impacted by it. The countries of Niger, Iraq and Myanmar are some of the only nations that reported an uptick in terrorism related incidents, so this downward trend is not universal.
If we were to take a look at the nation that has suffered the worst terrorism so far, the country at the top of the list is Afghanistan. The resurgence of the Taliban in the Central Asian nation made matters worse because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up allowing terrorists to operate with impunity.
However, it’s not the Taliban that’s responsible for the most terrorism as far as 2022 is concerned. This dubious honor instead belongs to the Islamic State which is based in Iraq as well as Syria. That explains the increase in terrorism in Iraq. Spill over into Afghanistan is also making terrorism far more pronounced there than might have been the case otherwise.
Afghanistan’s southerly neighbor Pakistan is also one of the 9 countries where the impact of terrorism was stated to be Very High according to this report. Moving further south to India shows a High impact of terrorism, although things are definitely better in that part of the world than they are in its northerly neighbors.
You might think that the US would be one of the countries where terrorism does not have all that much of an impact. While the US is mostly safe from Islamist terrorist groups, the global superpower does have a serious problem with white supremacist groups as well as other domestic terror elements.
Hence, the US has a Medium impact rating for terrorism, although Canada does a lot better considering its own impact rating for terrorism was deemed Low. France also does similarly to the US with a Medium impact rating, as does Germany. Meanwhile, the UK managed to get a Low rating, with the Republic of Ireland doing even better thanks to its Very Low rating.
Countries like China, Kazakhstan and Mongolia are unique. They don’t seem to be suffering from any terrorism at all based on this report. That makes them one of the few nations in the world to receive the coveted No Impact rating. It must be mentioned that these countries also have authoritarian regimes that don’t usually put out accurate data.
